Revolutionizing Facilities Management With Accurate Digital Twins

Whether you’re a property manager or insurance company, you already know that the cost and logistics of facilities management has skyrocketed in recent years. Inflation and an increase in natural disasters like floods, fires, or extreme weather events have made facilities management more critical than ever. Those changes also mean there’s no margin for error when surveying structures for possible problems before they turn into an expensive claim or repair.

In addition to increased construction and repair costs, larger facilities can have difficulty finding the necessary surveying manpower to capture data when it’s needed. Today's environment requires a more automated solution so you can easily survey whenever it’s needed and with just a single person.

We developed the Nexys 3D mobile mapping platform to address these issues and give facilities management the ultimate modular surveying tool so they can quickly capture accurate surveying data safely and efficiently in almost any environment.

Expand Your Toolkit With Nexys

Currently, there are a few tripod-based or mobile tools that facilities managers and insurance companies can use to survey properties for 3D models. The problem is that most of these are bulky, time-consuming, or simply just not flexible enough for the job. Technology such as LiDAR base stations or fluid-based floor surface analysis can also interrupt normal operations of the facility for hours or even days at a time.

We engineered the Nexys modular mapping payload to be a flexible tool for surveyors in the field so they can do more with less. Capturing data efficiently Nexys-DJI-M350-3and accurately without putting themselves in harm's way. Nexys can be used as a handheld device, attached to a backpack, or even mounted to an aerial or ground-based drone for autonomous exploration and mapping. No other mapping system offers this type of flexibility and cost savings with this level of autonomous operation. With Nexys, you get three different mapping devices in a single unit.

For example, after an incident at a property, you can quickly deploy the handheld Nexys to survey specific areas to acquire instant data on any structural changes.

For larger projects involving planning or expansion of the facility, you can attach the Nexys to a backpack for a full scan of the entire property. Or mount it to a ground-based robot like Spot to walk the facility regularly. Finally, for more Nexys-backpack-construction-social-smexpansive or possibly hazardous environments, you can attach that same Nexys unit to an aerial drone and survey entire sites and structures. Powered by a LiDAR-based SLAM algorithm, Nexys controls the drone without the need of a pilot in the loop for completely autonomous exploration beyond visual line of sight and in GPS-denied environments.

Digital Twins for When Disaster Strikes

After a natural disaster like a flood, hurricane, or fire, you need to quickly assess any damage to report for insurance and prepare for the future. With a portable mapping tool like Nexys, you can quickly perform a scan before and after an event to  detect any changes. Because of the accuracy of the Nexys and ease of use, it can quickly generate maps of large complex environments and comes equipped with two cameras to capture more detail and help detect minute shifts or level changes that are not immediately apparent.

You can then access these photospheres for any location within the scan. This gives facility managers better insight into structural quality and comes embedded throughout a 3D point cloud. Once processed, users can "walk through" a point cloud with embedded photospheres and perform inspections via tablet or computer. The 3D data and images are all in standard formats so you can share and collaborate efficiently across different teams and stakeholders.

Each point cloud captured by Nexys can be exported in a variety of formats such as XYZ, PLY, or LAS. In this demonstration, you can see that our data can be successfully integrated into the Trimble Reality Capture Platform.

Simply set up a shared Trimble folder and you can instantly share Nexys surveying data with technical and non-technical stakeholders involved in the project.

Nexys-with-Tablet-construction-smThe Nexys handles all post-processing locally on the tablet to ensure you’ve captured the data you need. Once post-processing is complete, you can then upload it to the shared Trimble project folder so your entire team has instant access.

These workflow improvements are designed so you can go from surveying to decision-making in the shortest possible time and with the least amount of friction.

Modular Payload For Mapping Anywhere

Nexys was designed with flexibility and modularity in mind to help property managers quickly and easily build digital twins of their locations. We understand that no two facilities are the same, and this means every solution needs to adapt.

Equipped with an Autonomy License, the Nexys can be mounted to an aerial drone or ground-based robot for autonomous exploration and mapping. Teams can quickly launch mission to map large areas without needing an operator to walk on foot. Nexys was designed to fit seamlessly into the surveyors toolkit to help them quickly and easily map facilities by drone or by hand.
